Chinese bus companies tell drivers not to hit supercars

Chinese bus companies tell drivers not to hit supercars

Being a bus driver in China must be awful. Lots of traffic, lots of people, no tipping. And the job has just gotten worse in Jinghua, where a bus company has instructed its drivers to please stop hitting expensive supercars. To illustrate the point, drivers were shown a poster with supercar logos to watch out for and how much the associated cars were worth. Hit a Lamborghini, you'll be out 5 million yuan (almost $800,000 USD). And right there, the last vestige of fun was taken away from the under-appreciated Chinese bus driver.

The poster even includes the Shelby Super Cars logo, which can't possibly be all that common in China.

Keio University demonstrates 3-Axis Analog Joystick For Touchscreen Devices

This elastic device converts the camera of your smartphone into a fully functional 3-axis analog joystick. It is under development by a research group at Keio University. “The way this system works is very simple. There are small markers in this elastic device and the markers are detected by this built-in front-facing mobile phone camera. By tracking how the markers move as the elastic device deforms, this system enables a variety of inputs.”

“The camera is detecting the markers right now. When you press the device, like this, the markers move further apart, or they move horizontally or vertically, or they get skewed.

Skyrim updates to 1.5.26 to improve crash to desktop problems

Skyrim updates to 1.5.26 to improve crash to desktop problems

Earlier this week, we reported an update that Skyrim was getting to 1.5 for the PC version but according to reports, there was a lot of feedback to the game developers that broken quests still remained despite the patch. Now, after just a few days, Bethesda has already rolled out another patch for the PC versions while stammering apologies to the Xbox and PS3 users. The patch is titled 1.5.26 and according to Bethesda, one of the key updates in its latest patch is the reduction rate of crashes to the desktop when using plug-ins with the game.

Fiat 500X crossover will debut next year

What started as only a cute little hatchback, the Fiat 500 will now be growing into a full range of models. The new cabriolet and Abarth versions have already launched here in the United States, and we just got our first glimpse at the larger 500L (pictured above) during the Geneva Motor Show. But now, Automotive News reports that an even larger 500 crossover, dubbed 500X, will be heading into production next year. Like the 500L, the 500X will use a widened version of Fiat's small car architecture that currently underpins the Punto in other markets.

DoubleTwist adds Google Music support, gets an alarm clock app

DoubleTwist is certainly still one of the better music management options for Android, and it just keeps improving. Two days ago the player app got an update and now it can hook into Google Music, though, it only recognizes songs that you've checked for offline access from within the Google app. An unfortunate restriction, but at least your tracks don't disappear into the ether if you prefer to play back your tunes via DoubleTwist. There's also new functionality coming to what is now less an app than an ecosystem, thanks to the just released DoubleTwist Alarm Clock.

Apple could be looking to settle its patent war under Tim Cook's leadership

The patent war that Apple is currently embroiled in against a host of Android manufacturers has been going on for years. According to a Stanford University law professor, Mark Lemley, this has cost Apple and their opponents a whopping $400 million in litigation costs over the years, money which could have been spent in furthering the development of their products. In any case, we're sure that many of you guys probably think that this has dragged on long enough, and if the reports are to be believed, Tim Cook feels the same way too.

Apple and Foxconn agree to drastically improve working conditions following Fair Labor Association report

The Fair Labor Association has released its findings from the lengthy investigation of working conditions at Foxconn's Chinese plants where Apple products are made. While the PR and report largely avoid over the top rhetoric and direct condemnations of the companies, they hardly paint a rosy picture. The watchdog found that in the last year all three factories violated not just FLA code for hours worked, but Chinese legal limits of 36 hours of overtime per month. During peak periods, employees worked more than 60 hours a week on average and many more than seven days in a row.

Samsung Registers Trademarks for Three Galaxy Devices

Samsung Registers Trademarks for Three Galaxy Devices

Samsung may have come up with three great news for three great smartphones, or they're just covering their bases on some names they've thought up and aren't keen on using them just yet. Whatever the case is, they've registered three new trademarks for names: Galaxy Grand, Galaxy Next, and Galaxy Premier. The Galaxy Next already exists and it's a low-end Android phone from last year. While the trademark filing descriptions are calling these phones everything since sliced bread, Samsung reserves the GALAXY name exclusively for phones and tablets.

It's safe to say, then, that none of these are Android-powered microwaves.

NEC's tactile touchscreen nudges at the future

A touchscreen's fatal flaw is its lack of feedback: imagine the satisfaction if you could feel those Angry Birds as they flew across the screen. NEC and the Tokyo Institute of Technology wanted a simpler solution to tactile displays than Senseg's electrostatic-field based tech. Instead, this device uses a wire (yup) anchored on each corner of the display — when force is shown on screen, it jerks the screen in the corresponding direction. You can see it in action after the break, accompanied by the restful tones of Diginfo's narrator.

Well, it looks like Hasbro's case against the electronics manufacturer has been thrown out the window. While talking on the phone and texting ranked among the highest sources of distraction, personal grooming and reaching for objects in the vehicle also played significant roles. Outside of using electronic devices, AAA found teens were distracted around 15 percent of the time while behind the wheel.

Honda working on nine-speed automatic transmission?

Honda may be out to improve the fuel economy of its powertrains by throwing extra gears into the transmission. Automobile Magazine reports the Japanese automaker is currently working to use a new nine-speed gearbox developed by ZF in its products as soon as 2014. If you're keeping track, this is the same transmission set to debut in a host of Chrysler products, including the replacement for the Jeep Liberty. Despite the additional gears, ZF says the transmission is surprisingly compact, thanks in part to the fact that it uses planetary gears in place of a traditional design.

First, Volvo has always said the C30 Electric is a limited program. When the company started making the attractive EV in last summer, the public plan was to make just 250 units.
