Porsche also revealed that its ALMS GT class partnership with Flying Lizard Motorsports is being discontinued as well. Medical research facility Cleveland Clinic and IBM are teaming up to develop ways to let supercomputer Watson become a useful tool for doctors. The machine's ability to analyze language and scour its database for answers is hoped to offer quicker and more exhaustive diagnoses for patients. As modern medical students spend less time memorizing diseases, they're focusing on learning how to think critically and navigate the huge amount of available data. Big Blue is also hoping that the Jeopardy champion will learn how to digest a person's medical records in order to match up their history with maladies.

While the whack of two helmets might be an unavoidable part of some high intensity sports, knowing a little more about what's going on during those impacts can mean the difference between a time out, and time in hospital. Reebok-CCM Hockey and electronics form MC10 have just announced that they are developing a wearable cap that will register the strength and severity of head impacts during games. The project is actually aimed at all sports and age-groups, and uses high-performance electronics reshaped into an ultra-thin, breathable, flexible system that technology partner, MC10, expects to also be much more affordable.

As a profit-driven network, ITV has its work cut out in the online streaming world when the BBC's iPlayer looms overhead. How do you compete with a cultural institution. Its solution these days is one of sheer choice: it's launching a publicly available beta of its ITV Player refresh that offers TV show rentals. While viewers will have free, ad-backed viewing for the last month's worth of programming, they'll also have the choice of renting 30-day access to archived episodes at 49p (79 cents) each without the pesky commercials in between.

While Apple encroached on the 7" tablet territory that the late Steve Jobs once declared that tablets in the "tweens" (meaning the 7" category) are basically DOA – Dead On Arrival, one raised eyebrows and questions as to whether Steve would have approved of such a move or not. Well, Samsung and Google has hit back at Apple's bread and butter tablet, their iPad, by introducing the Nexus 10. Running on the latest version of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, the Nexus 10 will clearly go up head to head against the iPad, sporting a whopping resolution count of 2560 x 1600 pixels (300ppi), clearly kicking Apple's vaunted Retina display.

Microsoft may be readying an all-out marketing blitz to get Windows Phone 8 all up in your cranium, but those loyal to Sprint won't be getting anything but perturbed. During today's Windows Phone 8 event in San Francisco, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced that AT&T, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile were "all in" for Windows Phone 8. Strangely, however, America's number three carrier is evidently "all out." While Sprint was a carrier for Windows Phone 7 handsets like the HTC Arrive, the carrier was showing cold feet as far back as January of this year. Given that the Arrive was its "most returned phone," though, it's hard to cast blame.

US Navy laser a couple of years away

US Navy laser a couple of years away

A battleship or aircraft carrier with laser guns. This sounds right out of a science fiction movie, but that age of naval warfare could very well happen in just a couple of years' time if the Navy has their way. Basically, the US Navy's plan for "directed energy" (their slang for laser cannons) is said to be two years away from reality, at least according to Rear Adm. Matthew Klunder, the chief of the Office of Naval Research. This is definitely a huge step forward, considering how earlier estimates from Klunder's laser technicians point towards a four year time window.

Klunder continued, "We're well past physics.

It's Legal to Jailbreak Your iPhone, But Not an iPad

Jailbreaking an iOS device has been in a murky grey area legally, but it just got a lot clearer: today, the US Copyright Office issued an exemption to the Digital Millenium Copyright Act that jailbreaking a device does not violate US copyright law. However, it's not a blanket ruling, because tablets are, according to the US Copyright Office, “difficult to define.” The Electronic Frontier Foundation, along with a host of other electronic freedom organiziations, has been appealing to the Copyright Office to make exemptions to the DMCA legalizing the customization of a device you own.

Apple nearing deal with labels for internet radio service, says Bloomberg

Rumors of a music streaming service from Apple have been circulating since the dawn of the iPod age. Bloomberg is reporting that an internet radio platform from Cupertino is nearing reality, as talks between Apple and the major music labels have "intensified." The negotiations center around how to share revenues from an ad-supported service that, according to reports, would pose more of a threat to sites like Pandora than it would Spotify. In fact, after Bloomberg reported that the new Apple service could launch during the first quarter of 2013, Pandora stocks plummeted over 17 percent and trading of the company was briefly halted.

Remember that $1 billion decision that Samsung violated Apple's patents. One of the patents in question, the famous “rubber banding” or “physical inertia” patent, has been completely nullified by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Samsung informed Judge Koh earlier this week.  The patent describes how when scrolling on a touch screen, and you reach the end of a passage, how the screen bounces back up.  The request to reexamine the patent was filed during the spring, but the non-final office action nullifying its claims wasn't filed until earlier this week.
