BlackBerry 10 L-series tutorial videos surface online, give a literal peek at the future (video)

Those of us who've used a BlackBerry PlayBook will be familiar with the inevitable first-boot tutorials showing how to navigate the swipe-driven interface before we're let loose. Thanks to a series of demonstration videos leaked by BlackBerryItalia, it's apparent that we won't escape that educational process on BlackBerry 10 devices, either. The four clips show the basics of what we know the gesture experience will be like on full-touch L-series phones, including the signature BlackBerry Peek to check notifications and the unified inbox.

Geek.com reports that 11-year-old Victoria Walker, with an assist from grown-up software designer David Grau, has designed an app called “Rode Dog” that makes incessant barking sounds at people who are using their smartphones in their car, and it won't stop barking until they put their phones down.

ZTE has plans for Mozilla phone launch in early 2013

We did see a quad-core powered ZTE Grand Era U985 smartphone late yesterday evening, but that smartphone does seem to be headed only for China. The thing is, ZTE seems to be pursuing after a larger market share in the smartphone industry, with word that there are solid plans to roll out a Mozilla phone sometime early next year, at least according to the Wall Street Journal and Reuters. The Wall Street Journal claims that ZTE is in cahoots with Mozilla so that they will be able to better diversify their product range and not rely too much on Android and Windows Phone as their mobile operating system crutches.

Muscle Wire Solar Space Wing Kit

Science can be a really fascinating subject. Many people probably would want to see science in action in order to discover just how interesting life it. But that will be taking it out of context when trying to explain something like the Muscle Wire Solar Space Wing Kit. The Muscle Wire Solar Space Wing Kit is simply a science project that you can do when you have some vacant time available. This project may take some assembly time which might also require some soldering and hand tools experience.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT, replacement for the already-bonkers SLS AMG, adds 20 horsepower, stiffer springs and dampers, retunes the adaptive suspension and throws 20-inch wheels at the back end. It's a revamp that allowed the SLS AMG GT to snip five seconds off of a lap around the Nürburgring compared to the "snail-like" SLS AMG. In this video, Mercedes DTM team driver David Coulthard takes the new gullwing out on that very same ring, talks us through its increased performance and then gives us a walkaround to show off the cosmetic changes. Not surprisingly, he's a fan.

Kodak Lets Go of Inkjet Printer Business

Another round of sad news for Kodak. After filing for bankruptcy, shutting down its digital camera business (a device Kodak invented but did not improve on the technology further), and getting itself in a web of patent infringement lawsuits, the company has announced it will no long sell consumer inkjet printers starting next year. Instead, the 123-year-old company will focus its efforts on commercial printing devices. In an effort to keep business afloat, Kodak decided to auction off its bevy of patents valued at up to $2.6 billion.

. Ripping apart new gadgets is what the guys over at iFixit do best, and the latest device to get the teardown treatment is the 7-inch Amazon (AMZN) Kindle Fire HD. Unlike the third-generation iPad that received a repairability rating of 2x10 (a score of 10 is the easiest), Amazon's Kindle Fire HD received a 7x10 from the iFixit team. iFixit praised the ease with which the Kindle Fire HD's rear case can be removed, the lack of adhesive attached to the tablet's battery and use of mostly Phillips screws as factors that contributed to the higher than average repair score.

Certain black iPhone 5 reportedly come with dents out of the box

It seems to have become a routine now. Every year Apple releases a new iPhone and while most of the customers are delighted a small subset of buyers pull the short end of the stick. With the iPhone 4, it was the antennagate issue, with the iPhone 4S it was the battery life problem and now some iPhone 5 buyers are noticing dents on their prized possession. Yes, several owners, particularly of the Black & Slate colored model, are reporting dents and scratches along the chamfered edges of their new iPhone right out of the box.

Huawei's boss must have been a Boy Scout, since he's taken its "be prepared' motto deeply to his heart. CEO Wan Biao has told Reuters that his company is working on its own mobile OS just in case its partners "won't let us use their system[s] one day." We don't expect to ever see the software, but given the fractious nature of the business, it's more likely to be a barbed hint at Google and Microsoft to keep sending flowers and chocolates to Shenzhen.

The Escape Jacket – Wearable Faraday Cage

I'm sure we've all been there.  You're in the cinema, at a concert, or in a meeting or a presentation, and your mobile phone goes off attracting much unwanted attention and many death stares.  Despite all the best intentions, it's easy to forget to turn off your phone or set it to vibrate. Well, designer Victor Johansson from London has a concept to stop your embarrassment.  The Escape Jacket contains an inner pocket that acts as a Faraday cage that will block all radio frequency waves, so even if you leave your phone on and someone tries to contact you, your mobile won't pick up the signal.

Naturally, there's a good amount of anticipation surrounding the release of Windows Phone 8 handsets, but before that day arrives, developers will need proper software to code apps. Microsoft stopped short of releasing the requisite tools, but today, the company announced the Windows Phone 8 SDK preview program — essentially a way for developers to get in line for when the software becomes available. As is, all developers must submit an application to the Microsoft Connect website by Monday, September 17th, at which point, they'll be provided instructions “the following week” of how and where to download the SDK.

The Autographer Wearable Intelligent Camera

The Autographer Wearable Intelligent Camera

While people may have a wide range of choices when it comes to digital cameras, they generally would get cameras with the same general function. People need to seek what they wish to capture, focus the camera and then click to capture. That's how all digital cameras basically work similarly to each other. It would be interesting to have a digital camera that captures images by itself for a change. This is where the new Autographer comes in.

The Autographer is unique in that it may be unlike the usual digital cameras in the market today. Just how different? Well, the Autographer is able to take pictures by itself as you are wearing it.

It runs Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich - almost certainly upgradeable to Jelly Bean - and features a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor, LTE, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, 13MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory, and a 2,600 mAh battery.
With such specs, the Vega R3 can be certainly seen as a direct competitor to Samsung's new Galaxy Note II.

No matter which way you cut it, the Android-based Wikipad gaming tablet - dubbed as much despite not having any connection to Wikipedia - is unusually expensive. As a 10.1-inch Android tablet, it's comparably priced with the leaders of the market (of the Apple and Samsung variety). The obvious problem comparatively with the big dogs: visibility. What is Wikipad, anyway. And who made it? "This is our first product into the market," consummate salesman and Wikipad CEO James Bower told us in an interview earlier this week - yes, the company's name is shared with its first product.

Google patent delivers close-up photos when your phone can't, Blade Runners would approve

It's been 30 years since we saw Deckard track down replicants by having a machine “enhance” pictures, and yet we're still stuck with distant-looking photos when we want more detail than our smartphone cameras can manage. While we'd argue that a few phones already live in that Blade Runner future, Google has just obtained a patent that could give the rest of us a helping hand. If the zoom isn't up to snuff, the proposed software could gauge a mobile device's position and orientation to offer a closer, already-taken photo from a server as a substitute, whether it's a Street View shot or a more traditional image.

The relationship between Apple and Samsung can't be very good right now, but it seems in spite of Samsung's loss to Apple in their legal battle, Apple still needs Samsung for a variety of components for their products, and Samsung probably needs Apple as a customer as well. There have been reports in the past that suggested that Apple was looking for alternative manufacturers to reduce their dependency on Samsung, and adding to the rumors is the latest one in which Apple has reportedly (via Bloomberg) offered TSMC over $1 billion for dedicated production of their chips.

Unique Feature Makes This A Very Special EV. The most innovative part of the Audi A3 E-Tron prototype isn't found under the hood or in its battery compartment. Instead, one must sit in the driver's seat and move slightly to the side, then peer at the two smallish steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
On traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, a quick tug on the left paddle shifts the transmission down one gear while the right is used for shifting the gearbox up. However, nearly all battery-electric vehicles (BEV) have but a single-speed transmission. Paddle shifters are completely unnecessary.

The only further requirements are a sewing pin and some hand power.
