Skype update brings floating picture-in-picture video calls to Android tablets

Skype update brings floating picture-in-picture video calls to Android tablets

The last time we heard from Skype, it was back in October when they introduced a fresh new UI for tablets. Today, Microsoft is going a step further, giving Android tablet users the single best feature to date: picture-in-picture video calling. New for Skype 4.5 — now available on Google Play — the app is now able to run on top of other apps, continuing a video call in a popup window no matter what you may be doing on your tablet. Skype calls it a first of its kind and brings their app that much closer to its desktop counterpart.

No word if PIP will ever make its way to smartphones — this is tablet-only for now.

GTA: San Andreas For iOS Released

GTA: San Andreas For iOS Released

We reported last month that Rockstar is going to release Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for mobile devices in December. At that point in time, Rockstar did not provide a concrete release date. If you have been waiting to go back to the early 90s where CJ and the Grove Street Families owned the town, you don't have to wait any longer. GTA: San Andreas for iOS has been released.
Unfortunately, the app is being rolled out in stages, which means that it isn't live in all countries at this point in time. Folks in New Zealand can already get their hands on it through the app store, it is expected that the title will make its way to the U.S.

BioPen Handheld 3D Printer

Scientists over at the University of Wollongong, Australia, have managed to come up with the BioPen, a handheld 3D printer which, should it be successful, be able to replace traditional surgery by making it a more artistic work, so to speak. With the BioPen handheld 3D printer, it is capable of printing bone directly onto patients in the operating theater itself, now how about that. Does this mean that budding doctors and surgeons will now have to take up at least a module in art in medical school from now on.

It was recently revealed that not only has the NSA been monitoring cellphones, but it seems that the gaming community has not been spared as well, as reports have claimed the NSA has conducted surveillance on Xbox Live, World of Warcraft, and Second Life communities. Well the good news is that if you're starting to get a little paranoid and want to protect yourself from being spied on, the folks at Cyanogen Inc. have revealed that starting with the nightly build of CyanogenMod 10.2, SMS and MMS messages sent will be encrypted using the TextSecure protocol.

Additional Nokia Lumia 2020 "Illusionist" Rumors Surface

A couple of months ago, Nokia unveiled the Lumia 2520, a 10.1" Windows RT tablet, but it wasn't too long after that announcement that rumors began to circulate that Nokia could have a smaller tablet in the works. Codenamed "Illusionist", this particular tablet is said to be of the 8.3" variety, and subsequent rumors have suggested that the tablet could be known as the Lumia 2020 and was pegged for a 2014 release. Recent rumors have surfaced and are now pointing at a device whose model number is the RX-115, which some are speculating to be the Nokia Lumia 2020 "Illusionist".

Tablets come in all shapes and sizes, but if you're too fussy about what brand you are purchasing, you might be interested to learn the UK budget supermarket chain, Aldi, has launched their own Android tablet which is priced at around $131 after conversion. It seems that the low price point was a hit amongst customers as there have been reports that there were long lines of customers who couldn't wait to get their hands on the device, with one outlet at Old Kent Road in South London reporting that hundreds of customers "battled" it out for their remaining 12 units.

LG G2 struggling against the competition, sales lower than expected in Q4

LG went all out with the G2, a smartphone that competes against the best of the best. Many of you know the LG G2 is actually my favorite device right now. I use it as my daily driver and am more than satisfied with it (read my review of the LG G2). Is the phone all that LG wanted it to be, though.
Life doesn't seem to be so good for the Korean manufacturer. They have reported good sales, but not as good as they were expecting them to be. The LG G2 has sold about 2,250,000 units, which is several hundred thousands less than the 3 million units they were expecting to sell in Q4, 2013.

Samsung Argues That Without High Subsidies, Their Global Business Would Suffer

When it comes to smartphones, it is without doubt that Apple's smartphones tend to be the priciest, if not somewhere at the top of the range. This is compared to other devices from Samsung where their high-end devices are pricey, but at the same time not as pricey compared to iPhones. According to an ABI Research report that surfaced earlier this year, it is because the average US subsidy for Samsung devices is set at 84%, whilst Apple's subsidies are at 74%, a good 10% less.

Another day, another lightweight, track-ready sports car manufacturer popping up and claiming to give us the world. Their goal is to build an 1,800-pounds sports car that uses a 430-horsepower, emissions-compliant V8. Based on the Palatov D2, a 1,600-pound car that looks like the love child of a Caterham, a KTM X-Bow and the Flip Car from Fast and Furious 6, Palatov and Sector 111 have dubbed the car Project Dragon. It will get a real name after it's all figured out.

When the FIA revealed the final calendar for the 2014 Formula One World Championship, it was lacking in one specific area: namely, the proposed Grand Prix of America that was set to take place in New Jersey just across the river from Manhattan did not make the cut. But the organizers behind the race insist that it has not been canceled – merely postponed. In a statement released hot on the heels of the FIA's decision, GP America chairman Leo Hindery, Jr., noted that the setbacks were primarily financial.

Bad news folks, if you were hoping for Fallout 4 to be announced in the near future, prepare to be disappointed. It turns out that the website, The Survivor 2299, was revealed to be an elaborate hoax pulled off by someone of the Fallout community. However given the complexity of the hoax, such as updating it with morse code that made references to the game, we guess it can't be helped that many bought into it. The website was launched back in November and shortly after, the Fallout 4 trademark was filed, although the trademark was soon disproved and turned out to be a fake.

Maybe you've heard of Bitcoin by now, but if you haven't, here's what you need to know: it's a decentralized, electronic currency contained in the world's first completely open financial network (for a better understanding, visit this informative Washington Post article). Bitcoin can be used to buy all sorts of products through the growing list of vendors who accept the currency, and Lamborghini Newport Beach now can be added to that list. On Wednesday, the Lamborghini dealership sold a Tesla Model S to a customer who paid for the car in Bitcoin, which were converted by an exchange service into US dollars.

Because virtual keyboards on tablets always present a problem for some users, there are a multitude of keyboard cases on the market.  The keyboards for the full-sized tablets are undersized and can be difficult for touch-typists to type on because of their non-standard layout.  I was surprised when I heard that manufacturers were introducing keyboard cases and covers for the iPad mini.  How could a keyboard that small possibly be useable.

Artificial Hand Lets You "Feel"

We have seen our fair share of prosthetic hands in the past, where they do offer a glimmer of hope to those who are missing a limb or two to live a somewhat more empowered life. The thing is, prosthetic hands will more often than not lack the sense of touch, which I am quite sure is not what Anakin Skywalker's prosthetic hand is lacking in the Star Wars movies. The lack of touch would then make it nigh impossible to tell whether one should apply more or less force when holding or manipulating an object.

Tesla's strategy to sell cars, such as the Model S, through manufacturer-owned retail stores has rubbed traditional franchise auto dealerships the wrong way. If there was one peeve that I have with smartphones is that sometimes their integration could be a little bit better. For example if one were to do a search in their web browser and come across a Facebook page or profile, it should open up the Facebook app, as an example. Well the good news is that Google has announced an update to its Search feature where search results can yield the option of allowing the user to open up their results in an app. For example if you were to Google a name of a celebrity, instead of surfing to the IMDb website, you can choose the option to launch the app instead.

Judging by the success that many luxury automakers are currently experiencing in China, it's no surprise that Lincoln plans to take advantage of the situation by peddling its wares across the Pacific.
